It's shocking that only so many people with autism want to work but struggle to find full-time employment. But then again, I am not actually that surprised. Having seen first hand as my other half has struggled with employment, faced with prejudice and stigma surrounding her Autism, I am left knowing that something is not right.
I stressed recently the need for education and how everyone needs to know a little about autism and aspergers. What's currently been done is not enough.
I am yet to suggest my other half looks at the National Autistic Society's website or any others for their help and guidance on autism. I don't know how well it will go down. She's not one to like to openly admit her 'disability'. She doesn't like people to know and she begrudges having to declare her disability on any job application.
I bet she's not the only one, and reluctantly I understand why. I've been with her a year and heard the reactions and gasps when I have on various occasions mentioned her autism. It gets me so annoyed, having someone I love so much looked upon like she's not normal.
So yet again she's looking for jobs, reading the descriptions, trying her best. Getting as far as an interview, getting asked about her autism and then turned down two days later. Something needs to be done to help those who want a job and are capable of working. Because let's face it, if you want to be out there working and not on benefits, in some ways, isn't that a bonus for all of us?
